Choosing Your Beam Length, Height and Casters
Pick the height first. The 8 ft build gives 68–98 in under the beam, the 10 ft build 92–122 in, and the 12 ft build 114–144 in. Measure the tallest thing you will lift, add the hoist and rigging, and stay inside that range. Then check your ceiling against the top of the range — the beam has to fit at full height.
Then pick the beam. The 8 ft beam gives about 72 in of trolley travel, the 10 ft about 96 in, the 12 ft about 120 in and the 15 ft about 156 in. The usable distance between the uprights is the overall beam length minus 18 in. The 12 and 15 ft beams step up to an 8 in I-beam with a wider flange, so make sure your trolley matches.
Standard glass-filled nylon casters come fitted. Total locking nylon casters and V-groove wheels are offered as options on this page — select the caster type that matches your floor before adding to cart.
Aluminum Construction and Height Adjustment
The frame is welded aluminum, so it resists corrosion and stays light for its rating. Vestil lists the smallest build at about 210 lb assembled and the largest at about 371 lb. That is the difference between rolling the crane to the next bay on its casters and calling in a forklift.
The uprights use pinned connections. To change the height, take the weight with a fork truck or another overhead lifting device, pull the pins, move to the next 6 in position and pin it again. The two included transport straps hold the frame together for a one-person move.
