Car Trailer Ramp Size Calculator

What Size Ramp Do I Need?

Loading a car or piece of equipment onto a trailer is only safe when the ramp is long enough. Too short, and the incline gets steep — steep enough to scrape a front bumper, drag the exhaust, or high-center the chassis right at the top. The correct length keeps the angle low enough to drive on and off cleanly.

Three numbers decide it: your vehicle's wheelbase, its ground clearance, and the loading height of your trailer bed. Measure them as shown below, enter them, and the calculator returns the minimum ramp length you need — then matches it to ramps from the brands we carry that fit, by length and per-axle capacity.

Where to measure: wheelbase, ground clearance, and your trailer's loading height (rise).
Enter the wheelbase.
Enter the ground clearance.
Enter the loading height.

Add this to filter to ramps rated strong enough. Leave blank to see every length that fits.

Results show the minimum length to keep the incline safe for your vehicle's ground clearance. Always match the ramp's rated per-axle capacity to your vehicle's heaviest axle.

Car trailer ramp sizing — common questions

How long should my car trailer ramps be?

It depends on your trailer's loading height, your vehicle's ground clearance, and its wheelbase. A lower car or longer wheelbase needs a longer ramp so the incline stays shallow enough to avoid scraping. The calculator above gives the minimum length for your exact vehicle.

How do I measure ground clearance?

On level ground, measure the vertical distance from the ground to the lowest fixed point under your vehicle — usually near the middle of the wheelbase. The lower this number, the longer the ramp you'll need.

What is loading height (rise)?

It's the vertical height from the ground to the top of the trailer bed or surface you're loading onto. A taller deck needs a longer ramp for the same incline.

How much weight capacity do I need?

Match the ramp's rated capacity to your vehicle's heaviest axle weight, not total weight. Ramps are sold in pairs and rated per axle. Use the optional axle-weight box above to filter to ramps that are strong enough; if you're between sizes, choose the next capacity up.
