Why Three Pieces Beats Two
A dual-runner set assumes a vehicle with two wheels in line, or four wheels in two tracks. A trike is neither — it has a single front wheel on the centreline and two rear wheels set wide.
Put a trike on two runners and the front wheel has nowhere to go. The centre ramp solves that directly, and it doubles as the walkway so the rider is on aluminum rather than on whatever the trailer is parked on.
The centre section carries 1,500 lbs on its own, which is the number that matters when a heavy front end and a person are both on it at once.
Eight Feet and a 57 Inch Spread
Trikes sit low and carry their weight high and far back, which makes approach angle more critical than it is on a two-wheeler. At 8 feet the climb stays shallow enough that the rear end does not drag at the transition.
The 57-inch overall spread puts the outer runners where a trike's rear wheels actually are. Runners set for a quad would be too close together and the wheels would ride the inner rails.
