Atlas Air Force AF5 Entry-Level Electric Air Compressor for Working Shops
Most small shops outgrow a 20-gallon hot-dog compressor in about a week — the recovery time on a basic impact wrench is too long, and a tire-mounting cycle empties the tank before it finishes. The next step up is usually a 5HP 60-gallon vertical, but the typical big-box-store version is loud, single-stage, and short on CFM.
The Atlas Air Force AF5 is built for that step-up: 5 HP motor on a 3-cylinder pump, 60-gallon vertical USA-made tank, 18 CFM at 90 PSI, 220V single-phase. Quieter than most competing single-stage compressors, with a hands-free tank drain extension and finned inlet tube. Atlas's entry point into commercial-grade air without the price tag of a 2-stage 80-gallon unit.

1-Stage vs 2-Stage: Why This Trade-Off Fits the Price Point
1-stage compressors max out around 125 PSI — most pneumatic tools run between 90–110 PSI, so 1-stage is fine for that range. 2-stage is necessary for 175 PSI work (heavy impacts, full sandblasting) but adds significant cost.
The AF5 is sized for shops that don't need 175 PSI continuous. With 18 CFM @ 90 PSI from a 60-gallon tank, the AF5 runs an entry-level sandblast cabinet, standard impact wrenches, ratchets, blow guns, and air tools at full duty cycle. If the shop later upgrades to a 1 in impact or a full-bay sandblaster, the next step is the 2-stage AF7 or AF8.
60-Gallon Vertical USA-Made Tank Is the Recovery Story
Tank volume is what carries a shop through a cycle-heavy job. A 20-gallon portable empties its reserve in about 15 seconds of impact-wrench use, then the motor runs continuously trying to keep up. The 60-gallon tank on the AF5 gives roughly three times the reserve, which means the pump cycles on, recharges, and shuts off — operating only when actually needed, not chasing the demand.
The vertical orientation cuts the floor footprint to a 28" by 18" rectangle, which fits against a wall in even a tight commercial bay. The tank itself is USA-made steel — not a thin-gauge import shell that pits and rusts after a few seasons of condensate. Combined with the hands-free drain extension and finned inlet tube, water management is built into the design rather than added on.

The Atlas Air Force AF5 is the right call for the working shop that's outgrown a portable but doesn't yet need a 2-stage unit. Real CFM, USA-made tank, and the build quality of the Atlas line at the entry price point.
