Capacity Across the Full Width
Capacity on a dock board is only useful if the deck is wide enough to keep both drive tires on it. This board measures 72" overall and leaves 69" of clear deck between the steel curbs, which covers the track of a typical counterbalance forklift with margin on both sides.
The 20,000 lb rating is the working figure for that deck. It is the number to check against the weight of the truck plus its load, not just the load on the forks, because the whole machine crosses the board.
The steel curbs run the full length of both edges. They are bolted rather than welded, which means their own mass adds to what the deck can carry while still doing the job of stopping a wheel from running off the side.
Matching the Board to the Height Difference
A dock board has to flatten the step between your dock and the trailer floor to a grade the equipment can climb. Different equipment tolerates a different step, which is why this board is rated two ways.
With a pallet jack or an electric forklift, the maximum height difference is 7". With a propane or gas forklift, which has more ground clearance and more torque, it goes to 9". Measure the worst-case trailer at your dock before you commit to a length.
