How to Choose Car Trailer Ramps
Three things decide the right set: the length you need for your car's clearance, the axle weight, and how the ramp attaches to your trailer. Every ramp here is aluminum, so one person can set most pairs by hand. The 5' x 15" EZ Traction ramp weighs 26 lb and the 7' 10" low-profile ramp 39 lb.
Length and Loading Angle
A short ramp gives a steep angle, and a low car can bottom out halfway up. Longer ramps lower the angle.
- 4' to 6' — Short ramps for trailers with a low deck and cars with normal clearance.
- 7' 6" to 8' — The middle range, including 7' 10" low-profile hook end ramps.
- 10' to 16' — Long car ramps for lowered and sports cars, in 16", 18" and 20" widths. A 12' folding Smart Car ramp is also available.
Capacity
- Car ramps — 2,000 to 5,000 lb per axle. The 5,000 lb sets take a full-size pickup.
- Heavier vehicles — 7,000 lb knife foot ramps and 7' 6" hook end or pin-on ramps at 10,000 lb per axle.
- Equipment ramps — 6' to 14' hook end and pin-on ramps at 8,000 to 12,000 lb per axle, and double pin-on ramps rated 20,000 and 23,500 lb.
End, Foot and Deck Options
- Hook end — Drops over the trailer rail and stays put, so the ramp does not walk sideways.
- Hook and plate hybrid — Short 4' to 6' ramps with a combined hook and plate end.
- Pin-on end — Locks into a skid seat bracket on the trailer.
- Knife foot or stub foot — Holds the ground end in place instead of skating on gravel.
- Deck surface — Standard ramps have serrated cross bars. EZ Traction ramps use a punch plate deck, so water, mud and snow fall through.
Extensions and Special Ramps
Lay-over trailer ramp extensions (5' x 15", 5,000 lb per axle) lengthen an existing ramp. The 8' x 37" scissor lift trailer ramp is rated 5,000 lb. Modular systems run 16' and 20' for step decks and truck trailers.
Car Trailer Ramp FAQ
What length do I need for a low car?
Go long. For lowered or sports cars, choose 10' to 16' ramps so the bumper and oil pan clear the ramp.
What is the difference between EZ Traction and standard decks?
Standard decks use serrated cross bars that bite the tread. EZ Traction uses a punch plate surface with raised openings that shed water and snow.
